History of Southampton
After the Norman conquest of Southampton in the year 1066, Southampton became a major port between Winchester, the capital of England at the time, and Normandy.
Southampton is a natural harbour, with two tides every day, one arising from the west and the second a few hours later from the east. Southampton is known for being the United Kingdom’s premier cruising port and the centre of ocean sailing, having hosted several international sailing events. What is better known is the fact that the famous ship ‘Titanic’ set sail from this city in the year 1912. It is also known as a Spa Town, with the discovery of the Chalybeate Water springs during the Georgian era, where the Spa gardens are laid out.
